De prijsvraag ‘Sukkah City, New York 2010’, vroeg om ontwerpen voor een moderne interpretatie van de Sukkot, volgens de regels zoals gesteld in het Joodse Oude Testament. Zo moet men de sterrenhemel vanaf binnen kunnen zien, moet het dak gemaakt worden van materiaal dat vroeger in de grond stond, maar daar nu niet meer mee in verbinding staat en is de minimum oppervlakte 7 x 7 handbreedtes, om enkele regels te noemen. SUKKOT (Het Loofhuttenfeest) wordt gevierd in de oogstperiode, om uitdrukking te geven aan dankbaarheid voor Gods gaven. Op een speelse manier brengt het feest in herinnering welke kracht er uitgaat van 'zijn' boven 'hebben'; dat eten, onderdak en gastvrijheid geen vanzelfsprekendheden zijn. In de Sukkot wordt het leven gevierd en nieuw enthousiasme gevonden.
Ontwerpbeschrijving: According to the way we build our cities, the architecture of this Sukkah is flexible, functional and based on a grid. So far, the Sukkah is just a framework with movable panels. According to the requirements however, there will always be some panels down, which gives the Sukkah an inner core. Man always will research these inner cores. Move them up, bring them down, searching for the best configuration at a given moment, always trying to be positioned in order to eat, sleep and interact. Always play his game of (dis)appearance. A game that architecture understands as creating and balancing both the public and private realm. The inner core of Sukkot brings man to a standstill and gives him the ability to absorb. This inner core, a mentality of thankfulness towards God; the celebration of life with all fellows can have many configurations but a core will always exist. The other -exalted- panels invite the world to join this celebration! Sukkot brings in remembrance, but can also visualize expectations for future times: This Sukkah challenges and invites to join and to extend its -statement about man living grateful in this world- towards a larger scale. In the end, -an exalted city- can appear."
